Weight Loss Injections (tirzepatide / Mounjaro)
NHS England and NICE have approved a new weight loss injection called tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro) for use in GP surgeries.
This will be introduced gradually, starting with people who are at the highest risk of health problems due to their weight.
Important: We cannot prescribe this medication for general weight loss or cosmetic reasons. Please take a moment to read the eligibility criteria below.
Who can get it in the first phase (starting 23rd June 2025)
To qualify, you must meet all the following conditions:
- Be 18 years old or over
- Have a BMI over 40 (or over 37.5 if you are from a South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African Caribbean background)
- Have at least four of these health conditions:
- High blood pressure (and taking medication for it)
- High cholesterol (and taking medication for it)
- Cardiovascular disease (such as a previous heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or poor circulation. This does not include conditions like atrial fibrillation or heart valve problems)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea (diagnosed by a sleep study and being treated – for example, with a CPAP machine)
- Type 2 diabetes

What else is needed
You must also take part in a weight management programme that helps you make healthy lifestyle changes. Monthly reviews are required for this treatment.
Because this medicine needs close monitoring and dose changes, we will contact eligible patients directly to invite them to join the programme.
If you meet the criteria, please wait to hear from us.
If you don’t meet the criteria right now, we are not able to offer treatment for weight loss at this time.
