Met Office Red Weather Warning
The Met Office has issued a Red Weather Alert for extreme heat covering Wednesday 24 June to Thursday 25 June 2026 (until 9pm). A Red Alert is the highest level of warning and means that significant impacts on health and daily life are expected.
Our services during the alert period
The practice will remain open during our normal hours on both days. However, please be aware of the following:
- Appointments – We will do our very best to keep all existing appointments in place. However, due to the extreme heat and the closure of many local schools (affecting staff with childcare responsibilities), a small number of appointments may need to be rearranged. If your appointment is affected, we will contact you as soon as possible. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
- Home visits – We will be providing a very limited number of home visits on these days. If you require an urgent home visit, please call the practice and we will assess your needs on an individual basis. Please only request a home visit if it is clinically necessary.
- Telephone and online consultations – Wherever possible, we may offer a telephone or online consultation as an alternative to attending in person, to reduce the need to travel in the heat.
Staying safe in the heat – important advice
During a Red Heat Alert, everyone is at risk – particularly older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions. Please follow this advice:
- Drink plenty of fluids regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty. Aim for at least 2 litres per day unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
- Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. If you must go out, wear loose, light-coloured clothing, a hat, and sun cream.
- Keep your home cool – close curtains and blinds on sunny sides of your home during the day, and open windows in the evening when the outside temperature drops.
- Check on elderly neighbours, relatives, and anyone who lives alone or may be vulnerable.
- ·Look out for signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, feeling faint or dizzy, nausea, headache, and muscle cramps.
When to seek help
If someone develops symptoms of heatstroke – a high temperature above 40°C, confusion, not sweating despite the heat, or loss of consciousness – call 999 immediately. This is a medical emergency.
For urgent medical concerns that are not an emergency, please contact the practice or call NHS 111.
Further guidance on coping in hot weather
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed. Please stay safe and keep hydrated.
